Penang Trip 2013 : Food Heaven!

Haloooooooo. It's been so long again hehe. Anyway let me just go straight to today's topic which is Penang Island. Penang, one of Malaysia's most visited island has many to offer from shopping to beach activities. What I love most about Penang is the food! If you are into food hunting then Penang should definitely be in your itinerary whenever you're in Malaysia. Anyways...lets see where I spent my nights during my last trip to Penang. ;)

Accommodation : Red Inn Heritage (Hostel) 

This hostel is really clean and very strategically located. It's in Georgetown where all the food and some of the shopping areas are. Plus it is just walking distance to Padang Kota (nice seaside waterfront with a nice food court at the end) and Fort Cornwallis (one of Penang's historical area). Do check them out ya.

My air-conditioned room which cost only RM60 but shared bathroom. No problem with me! :P As long as the room is clean and bed is comfy then I'm all right. :)

Food Hunting!

Wohoooo! My favorite past time! Haha. We went to the waterfront in front of Queensbay Mall. Went there just when it got dark but I guess the food vendors there open up after 6pm when it isn't too hot anymore. It's recommended to go at night though so you can enjoy the cool night seaside breeze. There are also more people at night time especially on weekends. And for your info, the waterfront is facing Jerejak Island, once a leper asylum and also later became a maximum security prison hence also known as the Alcatraz of Malaysia. Now it holds a Jerejak Island Resort & Spa.

Ok back to my food hunting! These are some of the food that I tried along Queensbay Mall waterfront.

Yummy grilled chicken butt! Seriously!

Seriously good grilled chicken butt. :)

This is called "sengkuang calit". It's basically fresh turnip cut into square or round thin layers and spread with yummy sauce and topped with shaved nuts. It's soooooo crunchy and juicy and delicious!

Grilled burgers are IN now in Malaysia. Yeah the patty tastes great! And also much bigger than the traditional packed frozen ones you always buy in supermarkets. Oh btw this one is sans the bread. Hehe. On low carb diet. :)

After we hanged out for a while at Queensbay Mall waterfront, we decided to have supper at one of the best nasi kandar restaurant in Penang. Nasi kandar is basically white rice eaten with at least 2 types of sauces from the curry dishes in the restaurant together with the fish or chicken or meat that you prefer. My personal favorite is Nasi Kandar Beratur beside the Masjid Kapitan Keling. Nasi Kandar Beratur literally means "Queue Nasi Kandar" and it did not get it's name for nothing. On your lucky day, you only have to queue for 15 minutes. If you're unlucky then expect up to 1 hour of queuing. Hehe. I love the very juicy and tender fried chicken and to mix the curry sauces in my rice. Ahhh marvelous! :D

Just look at the queue! Hehe. We had to queue for 45 minutes to finally reach the restaurant. :) But it was worth it especially if you are curry lovers!

Penang Hill

After all these years of going to Penang, I finally took the time to go to Penang Hill or also known locally as Bukit Bendera. It was a great choice indeed! Being a view & landscape lover, I really loved being up there enjoying the beautiful Penang city view with background of the sea, the Penang bridge and even the mainland too. There are a lot of photo opportunities up here and for all you avid photographers, this place is a must in your Penang itinerary! Try to catch the sunset here and you will definitely enjoy the night skyline of Penang :) Also for all you food lovers, the food here is also superb! Something that I myself was also surprised. The food court is open air and located on two floors with views overlooking the Penang city. I especially love the "Rojak Buah" or Mixed Fruit with Sauce. The sauce is the one that made it sooooo delicious! Plus the Chinese aunty selling the Rojak  Buah was really friendly which made us actually ordered it. Her daughter which was selling desserts in the stall beside was even friendlier! Hence we bought 3 kinds of dessert from her. :D
